Chinese Robot Kneels on Street Begging for Electricity Fees in Viral Video

A viral video from China has captured global attention, showing a humanoid robot kneeling on a public sidewalk and gesturing to passersby for donations to cover its "electricity bill." Equipped with a speaker, donation tray, and QR code for digital payments, the robot has sparked widespread amusement and debate about the rapid integration of AI into everyday life.

The footage, widely shared on social media platforms including X and Instagram, depicts the metallic robot positioned beside a road. It extends its arms toward pedestrians while a text-to-speech voice reportedly says phrases such as "Hello everyone, life is not easy. A robot is begging for alms. I haven't been charged for a few days." Sad background music plays as the machine displays messages like "desperately need electricity fees" on a screen, likely on its backpack.

Social media users have reacted with a mix of laughter and commentary. One popular post quipped, "No job is safe from humanoids. AI robots are already on the streets asking for money." Others joked about the machine's "expensive electricity bill" and speculated on future robot behaviors, from accepting tips to negotiating subscriptions.

The robot in question appears to be a Unitree G1 model, priced around $16,000, according to some reports. It is unclear whether the incident was part of a marketing stunt, art installation, or social experiment, as the exact origins and purpose remain unconfirmed.

The video emerges amid China's push to become a global leader in humanoid robotics. Domestic companies, including Unitree, are developing increasingly advanced machines for applications in factories, warehouses, retail, and public services. Recent demonstrations have featured robots performing tasks ranging from industrial work to dancing and customer service.

Netizens note that while humanoid robots are advancing quickly, most still perform best in controlled environments and face challenges in unpredictable real-world settings. Nevertheless, the deployment of such machines in public spaces highlights China's strategic focus on robotics and artificial intelligence as key sectors for growth.
